The English department brought a little Christmas to Carr Hill this week as students experienced a traditional Victorian Christmas market.

The market was created help students with the English Language paper they will sit as part of their GCSE course. Students had the opportunity to experience a traditional Victorian market with items designed to encourage their five senses. Year 10  tried sweets and mince pies, smelled spices, listened to Christmas carols and explored Christmas decorations from the Victorian period. The era was selected to coincide with one of the course's set texts -Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

During their visit to the market students wrote down notes about the things they experienced and were then tasked with using those notes to create a piece of descriptive writing helping to prepare them for their GCSE exam. They also had the chance to take a Christmas selfie with a selection of props.

English Teacher Miss Parkinson organised the activity. She said: “The traditional Victorian Christmas market was a great way for our students to gain inspiration for their descriptive writing. All the items are designed to help students get into the mindset of that time allowing them write a creative piece that demonstrates a greater understanding of the Victorian era. We hope that students will use what they have learnt during this activity to continue to improve their creative writing throughout their GCSE course.”
