Year 7 students recently spent a morning with self-development expert Ross McWilliam. Ross delivered an interactive presentation focusing on the importance of Growth Mindset. Growth Mindset is ‘a frame of mind – a belief system – we adopt to process incoming information. People with a growth mindset look at challenges and change as a motivator to increase effort and leaning.’
Ross said: “I believe all young people need a platform of belief, specific skills and supported guidance upon which to build future achievements, be they academic or otherwise. I have faced my own physical and emotional health challenges and these experiences have given me a clear insight into the development of young people in the world of high expectations and a results based society. I’m a firm believer that everyone can reach their potential in life by finding their talents. When you find one talent, you generally find another nearby – it’s just a case of working hard and smart.”
Year 7 Kai- Reece said: “I thought the workshop was good and it gave everyone a boost to be as positive as they can be. It was fun and entertaining and I liked how interactive it was. We learnt a lot that we can use in lessons and outside of school.”
Year 7 Melody said: “The main thing I learnt at the workshop was that challenges are positive things. I’m going to use growth mindset to help me in my maths lessons and at other times when I find something difficult.”
Head of Year 7 Mr Penney said: “We want to inspire our students and challenge their mindsets so they feel they can approach any new situations or changes with confidence and a positive ‘can do’ attitude. I think the workshop was a huge success, Year 7 threw themselves in to the challenges set and definitely demonstrated a Growth Mindset. Thank you to Ross for sharing his knowledge and experience with us.”
