Hundreds of prospective students, parents and carers attended the school’s 2018 open evening to find out what Carr Hill High School has to offer.

Guests were greeted by staff and students and handed a Carr Hill gift bag before exploring the school,  taking part in subject based challenges and activities and hearing from the headteacher.

In every faculty staff had created fun and interactive ways for visitors to gain an understanding of their subject. Those who visited the maths classrooms were challenged to launch a rocket, win a game of leap frog (using the least ‘leaps’) and play maths darts amongst other things. Over in english staff had created a Victorian Christmas market inspired by the GCSE set text a Christmas Carol. There was also lots going on in science, the highlights of the experiments on offer included looking at the chemicals in fireworks, finding out more about electricity, light, force and sound and studying different particles in humans and animals.

Year 5 Lacie said of her visit: “I’ve tried lots of new things this evening and I’ve especially enjoyed doing the experiments in science because they are different to anything I’ve done before. I was excited to come to the open evening and it’s been lots of fun.”

In the humanities block, those who visited geography could contribute to colouring a huge map of the world and take part in challenges to find out things such as why some volcanoes were more explosive than others, whilst in the history classroom there was the opportunity to build an Anderson shelter and take a history based quiz. In business studies staff were asking guests to come up with and post their best new business idea and in IT there was the chance to look at the journey of coding, 3D game design and find out more about Dreamweaver and other programmes which are taught at Carr Hill.

Over in the technology classrooms staff activities included challenging misconceptions about the amount of sugar in foods and learning about bridge structures whilst impressive, completed student projects were displayed. Performing arts students were running through rehearsals for the whole school production of The Little Shop of Horrors showcasing the best singing and acting the school has to offer. Visitors to music classrooms could also try out some of the instruments and music software used at the school. In the dance studio guests could watch Year 9 and 10 rehearsing for a solo assessment  which  asked them to demonstrate who they were as a dancer.

Art and Photography staff had organised for guests to try their hand at creating their own unique photo using a variety of different figures and scenes. There was also the opportunity to try a range of artistic techniques to create individual images.

Year 5 Eva said: “The Carr Hill teachers have been kind and helpful. I’ve been here before for the primary school athletics but this is the first time I’ve been in the classrooms. Art has been my favourite place to visit because I love drawing and being creative.”

In the gym and sports dome guests had the chance to play each other, or Carr Hill Sports Leaders, at table tennis and badminton. The fitness suite was also open for viewing. In modern foreign languages students could take a selfie using  French and Spanish inspired props and have a go at building a paper Eiffel tower.  In the health & social care classroom visitors had the chance to experience what it might feel like to have arthritis, work out their BMI and look at misconceptions about calorie intake whilst RS staff were inviting guests to think about how they would respond to the moral dilemma of a train about to derail, who they would choose to save and why.

Year 5 Harry said: “I think Carr Hill is different from my (current) school in a good way. It’s much bigger and there’s loads to do. All the Carr Hill students have been helpful and talked to me lots about what the school is like.”

Headteacher Mr Waller said: “Thank you to those who attended this year’s open evening. We hope the visit gave a good insight in to life at Carr Hill High School. We had a large turn out and it was an opportunity for us to showcase all the great things about our school community. I would also like to thank the many Carr Hill students who volunteered to help out on the night and our staff.”
