Carr Hill High School's Maths Faculty invited students from local primary schools to take part in a STEM based space themed competition.

Year  6 pupils, who came from Newton Bluecoats, Weeton St Michaels, Kirkham and Wesham, St Pauls, Ribby with Wrea and Treales spent their time at Carr Hill competing in an interactive Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) Day.

Pupils were split into teams with each person taking responsibility for a different area. The roles included; Project Leader; Chief Engineer; Finance Officer and Designer. Year 6 were then challenged with designing and building a rocket that could reach ‘Mars’.

Students started by taking part in a design meeting where one of their initial priorities was to calculate their first order of resources and build the rockets. Once this had been decided they moved on to purchasing test flight slots. Air pumps were used by pupils to power the rockets and the test slots gave pupils the chance to iron out any final issues before the competition to hit ‘Mars’ began. Students took aim at the target but had the additional challenge of having to ‘miss’ the other planets which were in the path.

At the end of the day students were awarded in a range of categories before the overall winners, Weeton St Michael's Stars, were announced.

Maths Teacher Mr Myers said: “Myself and the maths staff were impressed with the innovative thinking the primary school students showed when faced with this challenge. The pupils used creativity, logic, teamwork and organisational skills and the results were fantastic. Every student involved did really well and we thank them all for taking part.”
