Two Year 9 students, Rachel and Holly, have helped to select the Lancashire Book of the Year. The award is the longest running young people’s regional book award in the country and Carr Hill pupils have been reading the long list titles for the past year.

Following the shortlisting in March, Rachel and Holly were invited to the final judging at the County Hall. The award is one of only a few book awards which young people themselves are solely responsible for choosing the shortlist and the overall winning book.

Rachel and Holly were joined by other Year 9 pupils from across the county who, like them, had been given a collection of books, submitted by publishers as being the best books they had produced for the 12-14 age group. Rachel, Holly and a number of other Carr Hill students have been reading all the books selected and have now narrowed it down to the overall winner.

English teacher Miss Gardner said: “Our students have enjoyed being a part of the Lancashire Book of the Year award. It’s been a great opportunity to read a wide variety of literature and share their views with others their age.”

There will be a Celebration Day on Friday 6th July at the University of Lancashire, during which the 2018 winner will be announced.
