Not even persistent rain could put a dampener on this week's Year 5 and 6 orienteering Festival with 108 participants from 11 local schools joining us at Carr Hill for an afternoon of map reading, team building and a bit of friendly competition.

The participants were grouped in 18 teams and set off on a timed twenty minute competition to see how many of the orienteering markers they could find around the school grounds using maps and a bit of extra help from our Sports Leaders who were on hand to assist. After a drinks break, they had another twenty minutes to find the final markers before meeting in the Sports Dome for the results to be announced.

The festival is part of our Sports Partnership Programme in which local Primary School children have the opportunity to partake in sporting events at Carr Hill which they might not usually get a chance to have a go at.  This is the third year we have offered Orienteering as an option.  It is well received by the staff and pupils alike as it helps developing skills such as map reading, navigation, planning, spacial awareness, teamwork, communication and time keeping as well as meeting the criteria for the ‘Outdoor and Adventurous’ activity strand of the Key Stage 2 PE National Curriculum.

All the teams did very well, but after the score were totted up and double checked, St Joseph’s ‘A’ team were crowned the winners with an impressive score of 164 points.  Erin and Isaac from St Joseph’s also won ‘Best Pair’ with a score of 62. In recognition of their involvement each pupil received a certificate of participation.

PE Teacher and Sports Partnership Programme Lead Mr Doughty said, “Despite the conditions everyone seemed to enjoy the challenge and we were impressed with how high the scores were.  As usual our Sports Leaders were on hand to help with proceedings and were their usual positive, smiley and helpful selves, going above and beyond to ensure the younger children had a great afternoon”.
