Five of Carr Hill’s Sports Leaders have been selected to join Lancashire Young Coaches Academy which is funded by the Youth Sports Trust.  Tom and Millie from Year 10 and Katie, Elise and Emily from Year 11 were nominated by Mr Doughty and throughout the day they took part in helping to lead two sessions. One focussed on inclusion and differentiation during a wheelchair basketball game and one looked at how to use the STEP principle which encourages coaches to consider the space, task, equipment and people involved in the activity to devise an engaging and active warm up.

Mr Doughty said, “I nominated these particular students because of their enthusiasm and commitment as well as ability.  They really are shining examples of what a good Sports Leader should be and I was confident in their abilities to not only be selected, but to do themselves and our school proud.”

As a result of their efforts all five students were offered places on the academy with organiser Elaine Smith saying, “The Young Coaches Academy has gone from strength to strength over the last 4 years.  This year we had 68 applicants for 25 places. The applications from Tom, Millie, Katie, Elise and Emily were incredibly strong and on the day they certainly lived up to my expectations.  I hope that they enjoy their projects, I am sure that they will do an amazing job.”

Year 12 student Emily said, “It is a real privilege to be chosen out of so many applications to join the Young Coaches Academy.  It is an experience that not a lot of people will have the opportunity to get involved with and I’m really looking forward to developing my coaching skills and seeing where it leads to in the future.
