A former BBC and ITV producer turned Broadcast Journalism Lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire has been delivering master classes to sixth form students studying the Digital Media Diploma.

Gerrie Byrne, who has worked on North West Tonight, Match of the Day Kickabout, BBC Breakfast, Newsround, Granada Reports, Savage Planet and The One Show- to name a few, has been invited to speak to Year 12 and Year 13 students about her career as a broadcast journalist. As well as sharing her career experiences, which span 20 years, Gerrie has also been helping Carr Hill students with their project work giving them ideas about how to improve pieces to resemble industry standard during their IT and Media lessons.

Gerrie, who was brought up in Kirkham, contacted Carr Hill Sixth Form Centre earlier this year as Uclan are keen to develop links with local schools. Gerrie said: “ It has been a pleasure working with Carr Hill Sixth Form Centre students who are passionate about pursuing a career in the media industry. I’m sure we can continue working together in the future to provide students with further learning opportunities both here and at Uclan’s facilities.”

Digital Media Diploma teacher Miss Town said: “I would like to thank Gerrie for the time she has given to our students. Her industry experience and approach has influenced and inspired our students to deliver the best project work they can. I look forward to continuing our relationship with Uclan’s journalism department and the benefits it will bring to our students.”
