The Big Draw is taking place this month and Carr Hill students have been taking part in a range of activities to mark the importance of art. The festival, which encourages people to come together through the universal language of drawing, has inspired art students across year groups.

One of the many activities involved student Art Ambassadors spending the day creating artwork through STEAM (a play on STEM- Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) generating artwork by creating sketches of famous people from the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematical worlds. The students placed their drawings onto backgrounds covered in quotes, architecture and much more created by these famous people.

Year 9 Emily took part in the activity. She said: “We have learned a lot about the famous people we have chosen to draw which we might not have known without doing this project. The artwork not only looks good but also includes lots of factual information.”

Year 9 Josephine chose to draw Albert Einstein. She said: “Albert Einstein has an interesting face to draw as it’s very distinctive. It’s cool to be able to use his quotes and find out more about the things he believed in whilst creating art.”

Meanwhile, Year 7 students have been creating their own zebra drawings which will be printed onto postcards to sell- taking their art outside of the classroom and raising funds for charity.

Art teacher Mrs Williams said: “Year 7 were delighted to be part of the big draw and worked really hard on their observations of zebras which will be made into postcards later this term. The school has run similar postcard charity initiatives in previous years- helping to raise money to improve the welfare of animals from other countries.”

Other Year 8’s have also been inspired by the Big Draw Festival and have recreated artwork by the famous Marcello Barenghi. The Italian artist recreated super realistic drawings of everyday items. The students did a great job of drawing their own branded cans including pepsi, fanta and sprite- using mathematical keywords like parallel lines, eclipse and proportion.

Year 8 James chose to draw a Fanta can. He said: “I haven’t drawn anything like this before and it is difficult but I’m enjoying trying to get it right.”

Kayleigh, who is also in Year 8, chose to recreate a Pepsi can design. She said: “I chose Pepsi because I like it. This type of drawing is different to what I’m used to but it is something I’d try again.”

Mrs Williams added: “All the activities which have taken place over the last month have enabled our students to discover more about drawing and given them the chance to experiment with new techniques and different styles. We hope the activities have inspired the students to continue to draw in whatever form they enjoy most.”
