Carr Hill Sixth Form students interested in a career in teaching spent the day at Edge Hill University as part of the institution’s Teaching Week.

A group of Year 12 and Year 13’s found out about the different pathways into teaching, met undergraduate students studying a range of teaching courses and took part in an interactive workshop of their choice- options included  Outstanding Teaching and Learning, Managing Behaviour and Interview Preparation.

Edge Hill academic staff were also on hand to discuss the varying courses options, whilst advisers from Admissions, Financial Advice, Careers and Student Recruitment gave pupils the chance to find out about how to apply and what support could be on offer.

Post 16 Care Leader, Miss Stott, took the students on the day long programme. She said: “We have a number of students interested in becoming teachers and we know it is a competitive industry. Therefore, as a Sixth Form we are keen to give our students as many opportunities as possible to find out more about the options open to them within the teaching sector. We think it is important that students have the chance to meet and talk to fellow young people currently on teaching courses. Speaking to academic, career and student recruitment staff is also vital in helping our sixth formers understand what they need to do to gain a place on a course and make the most of their time studying- so that when they have completed their degree they are well equipped to gain employment in their chosen teaching area. This trip is just one of many organised by the sixth form to help prepare our students for the next stage in their lives.

“Carr Hill does not only offer students the chance to partake in externally organised events. The sixth form team also works with local schools so students have the opportunity to take part in appropriate work experience placements. The experience gained during these placements enables our young people to stand out from others- helping them to be accepted on to some of the best teaching courses in the country.”

In addition to teaching the sixth form also offers additional support and guidance for students interested in careers in medicine, Armed Forces and engineering.
