Pupils in Year 7 and Year 8 had a science lesson with a difference on Friday morning as presenters from the Royal Navy, BAE and RAF came in to teach them about waves, sound and light.

The interactive session, which also linked activities with different jobs in the engineering industry, included sound demonstrations- using sound waves and Mexican waves-to demonstrate how light travels, linking typhoons to the sound barrier and using laser pens and smoke machines to demonstrate the reflection of light off different surfaces to show how we see different colours.

Students were hugely involved in the event with many taking part in live demonstration in front of their classmates. For those who were not a part of the demonstrations there was plenty of opportunities to answer questions and show what they had learnt that morning.

Science teacher Miss Webster said: “The interactive session was a great way for our students to learn. The presenters were fun and really involved all the pupils. I think the methods they used to teach were particularly effective because they were so visual. The students came out of the session excitedly chatting about all the things they had learnt which was fantastic to hear.”
