Report by Student Sporting Elite Media Officer, Jack

Carr Hill High School’s annual Sports Day took place on Friday 24th June 2016. Although the day looked like it wasn’t going to be a pleasant one, in fact the weather for the majority of the day was decent! Anyway, the students didn’t allow the weather to put them off representing their colleges!

To start the day off during periods 1 and 2 were the field events. The events that took place were high jump, shot-put, discus, javelin, triple jump and long jump. All students who were involved tried their hardest and represented their college in a positive light. Meanwhile, those students who were not involved with the field events had the chance to make banners for their colleges in their mentor groups. They also had the chance to take part in Zumba which was led by Dance Academy coach, Miss O’Connor. It was a great way to get the other students involved and it also got some of the staff involved!

For the rest of the day was the track events and the whole school came down to watch their friends and peers participate in races. However, for any students who weren’t participating there were other events available including football, netball and an obstacle course.

It was fierce competition throughout the day as Years 7 to 10 took to the field and participated in races such as, 100 metre, 200 metre, 400 metre and 800 metre. One of the best events were the relay races as they were tense races and the switches really determined which college won!

For each race there was a ceremony which celebrated the first, second and third place of the race. It was a great atmosphere and the students received an overwhelming reception from the peers and the staff. Even though there were students who weren’t involved in races during sports day, they were supporting the college by cheering for their peers and showcasing their super banners.

However, the main event of the day was the amazing tug of war. This is always an intense event, which shows which college is the strongest! Each college showed clearly that they are as strong as one another. However, after fierce competition between all six colleges, Mercury was the worthy overall winner.

The overall winner of sports day will be announced at the annual Sportsman Dinner this year!

Year 9 Minerva student, Jack, said: “Running at BWFAC (Blackpool Wyre and Fylde Athletic Club) has helped me to progress in my athletic ability, which massively helped me in preparation for sports day. It has helped me increase my speed as well as my stamina, which helped, me in the 800m.”

Meanwhile Year 10 Apollo student, Morgan, said: “It’s great that I get to represent my college on sports day. Even if you’re not winning the race you’re still earning as many points as you can for your college. That is what it’s all about, team work. It’s also great to just be a spectator as you get to support everyone else who contributes to sports day.”

Also at the event were Sixth Form students who were in charge of the football and netball events and the inflatable obstacle course. The obstacle course was a fun and exciting part of the day. As well students were raising money for South Africa, as they were selling sweets and ice pops. Both sold very well and went towards a great cause.

Year 12 Netball Academy member, Jess said: “I think it’s important for the sixth form to bond with the school and sports day is a great way for it to happen!”

Events organisers and directors of 'I want Events' were in charge of music and sound at sports day. The company is run by former students, Adam and Nathan Vann. They made the event even more enjoyable by playing chart hits and made the whole atmosphere great.

Thank you to all the staff that worked hard on the day to bring a fantastic day! Also, congratulations to all the students who represented their colleges!
