From September 2016 Carr Hill students will be able to gain the skills needed to work in an industry which employs 2.5 million people and is expected to created 224,000 new jobs in the next five years alone.

The Sixth Form is launching an exciting Construction Diploma- a 12 month course covering bricklaying, painting and decorating, joinery, plastering and more. At the end of the course students will be well placed to apply for top apprenticeships and could be earning between £100 and £200 a day in a matter of years.

Students on the Construction Diploma will be based at Preston Vocational Centre (PVC)- a training facility specialising in construction. The course gives students the chance to learn basic skills in a wide varitety of trades and is as much about building skills as it is giving opportunities to try diffent trades. In addition to being an excellent training centre, PVC also has extensive links with local employers. Employers will often contact the centre about possible apprentices with many young people finishing their course and going straight into a paid apprenticeship.

A group of Year 11 and Year 12 Carr Hill students, who have expressed an interest in the Construction Diploma, recently visited PVC to take part in a taster workshop in bricklaying. The visit is one of a number taking place over the next few weeks.

Centre Manager Martin Grayston said: “The construction industry is booming at the moment, nationally and locally, so it is a great time to be going into the trade. Recently we were contacted by a former student who, on completing a course at PVC, went on to secure and finish a two year apprenticeship which led to permanent employment. This young man has just taken home over £1,000 in one week. Another former student recently won two prizes at the Construction Development Alliance Awards- winning the Apprentice of the Year Award and the Overcoming Adversity in Construction Award. This student is now working with Conlon Construction.

“Despite construction being seen by some as a male industry we have female students who have achiveved just as highly. Only last year one of our former female students was given the chance to help work on the £1 million Preston Remembers project, restoring Preston Cenotaph."

Assistant Headteacher Mr Napier said: “These are just a few of the success stories to come out of PVC. The teaching, facilities and contacts the centre has are invaluable and provide young people with a great opportunity to achieve big things. The Construction Diploma is an excellent course and we have already received a high volume of applications from students. If any students or parents/carers would like further information about the course please do not hesitate to contact the school.”
