A group of Year 8 students have been placed fifth out of 29 teams at the UK Mathematics Trust Regional Competition.

The pupils competed against schools from across the region; taking part in challenges which promoted mathematical dexterity, teamwork and communication skills.

Carr Hill High School was represented by Niamh, Nathan, Jessica and Max, who were selected due to their maths ability. The challenge, which is open to pupils in Year 7, 8 and 9, requires competitors to work in pairs and as a group as they complete four rounds of challenges.

Jessica said: “The test started off easy but the questions soon got harder. We didn’t get told our total score but we think we got about 190 out of 240 points.”

Nathan said: “We worked well as a team because we are all good at different things in maths. I think that is why we did so well.”

Maths teacher Mrs Jones said: “To be placed in the top five of almost 30 teams is a huge achievement and demonstrates the excellent understanding our students have across the maths curriculum. Well done Niamh, Nathan, Jessica and Max.”
