As our Year 11 Textile students prepare for their end of course exams much of the hard work is already clearly visible with the pupils putting the finishing touches to their coursework, which counts for 60 percent of their final grade. Vintage dresses, 60's designs and punk inspired clothing make up the collective of student work this year. These fantastic creations are just the tip of the iceberg with each pupil having also spent months researching, collating and designing their items and cataloguing their efforts in their bespoke design folders.  Each of the garments designed has taken up to 50 hours to create and students have been responsible for sourcing their own fabrics and patterns.

Year 11 Iona, who plans to work in costume design and has been making her ownclothes for a while, said: “I’ve been sewing for a number of years and making clothes for younger members of my family. This course has helped me enhance my skills and learn more.”

Fellow student Jess has also learnt a lot and credits the small class sizes for this. She said: “There is a really creative atmosphere in the lessons and the class sizes are small which means Mrs Goulding (Textiles teacher) can give us lots of support individually.”

Mrs Goulding, who worked in the Bridal industry and for international brands, such as Harrods, before teaching, said: “This group of students have been a pleasure to work with. The course is challenging but the students have been enthusiastic and diligent throughout. I think the quality of the garments speak for themselves.”
