The pupils are fully qualified to coach Boccia, which is a leading Paraylmpic sport, and spend one afternoon each week with year 10 and year 11 Pear Tree students.
The sessions involve warm up games and challenges before a mini Boccia tournament takes place.
The Boccia Young Leaders Award is open to all Year 11 Carr Hill students who put themselves forward with the final group selected by PE staff. The programme has been running since 2013 and Carr Hill enjoy a successful partnership with Pear Tree Specialist School.
Carr Hill student Lydia is one of the 18 students delivering the programme this year. Lydia said: “I put myself forward for the Boccia Young Leaders Award because I thought it would be a great experience and I wanted to do some voluntary work.”
Fellow Young Leader James said: “I had never played Boccia before so it has been interesting to learn about a different sport. It’s a good feeling seeing how much the Pear Tree pupils like the weekly sessions.”
Pear Tree Assistant Headteacher Kate Walker said: “It is a privilege to work with Carr Hill High School & Sixth Form Centre. The Boccia sessions allow our students to work with their peers in a fun and creative environment and the Carr Hill students are incredibly self-assured, confident and respectful of any barriers facing our students.”
