The students worked with the lecturers at UCLAN in their brand new laboratory to learn about life on mars. The pupils then programmed their own robots to navigate a route around a “mock” mars.

The robots had to manoeuvre over different terrain, avoid the craters, change direction and finally drill for samples. The students also used their maths skills to scale up their maps so they could programme their robot to cover the correct distance on the real mars challenge. The afternoon was spend analysing their samples by testing for evidence of nitrates, organic molecules, water and pH.
