Speakers included James Grime,  who showed students a variety of codes and how they can be used. He talked about the Caesar Code and how it was used, including a type of this code that Mary Queen of Scots used when plotting to assasinate Queen Elizabeth I. James was followed by Matt Parker who talked to pupils about mathematics and technology. He showed students an excel spreadsheet that he had formatted to have red, blue and green cells. When he zoomed out it was a picture of himself! He used a microscope to show that pictures on students mobiles were also based around the three cells or red, amber and green.

Finally, Marcus Du Sautoy spoke about death and maths and how there is a lot of maths used in predicting when an adult may die and the factors that are used. He also showed the audience a video about lemmings and how their population can change based on different factors. He got the students up to play a game of musical chairs based on this idea and showed a Disney video of the Lemmings 'suicide' which 'happened' every 4 years when in fact this was actually a set up!

Maths teacher Mrs Potts said:  “The students really enjoyed themselves and did their school proud. I am glad that they could see how maths is used outside of the classroom.”
