The students started by looking at lines of symmetry within several 2D shapes during their Art lesson. Some students identified the lines of symmetry by looking whilst others used templates to fold and explore their answers.

Pupils created their own hexagons using protractors and discovered they had a special quality of tessellation which inspired them to create their own tessellating display. Students also took inspiration from contemporary artist Damien Hirst whilst bringing their whole group display to life.

The idea of the activity, which is one of many cross subject learnings, was to help students understand the concept of rotation; a challenging topic which appears on the Maths syllabus.

 Art teacher Mrs Williams said: “Year 7 thoroughly enjoyed the maths element within their art lesson and are so proud of their results. Their work is currently on display in one of the Art classrooms and we’ve had some wonderful feedback from visitors, staff and students.”
