At Carr Hill High School and Sixth Form Centre the student voice plays a key part in providing a positive and successful learning environment.

Each year the school recruits pupils for a number of student leadership roles to ensure that the student voice is effective, and that pupils are fairly and equally represented.

This year the school has received a high volume of applications across all year groups and staff will soon begin a shortlisting process followed by interviews. At the end of the process each college will have its own Junior College Leader and each Mentor Group will have its own Junior College Mentor. The Sixth Form will have a Senior Student, for each mentor group, and a Head Boy and Head Girl.

The Junior College Leaders represent the students of their college to teachers, parents, governors and members of the public. They speak to large and small groups of parents, students and teachers and chair a range of meetings. They also coordinate the College Council and the various sub-committees and are responsible for bringing information together to improve the life of College pupils and the school community as a whole. The Junior College Mentors shadow the College Mentor and play a role in the organisation and leadership of the Mentor Group. There is one Junior College Mentor in each Mentor Group (eight per college), who is also a member of the College Council and represents the views of their mentor group.

The Senior Student is the lead student in each post-16 Mentor Group.  The Senior Student supports the tutor and plays an important role in the organisation and leadership of the Tutor Group. There is one Senior Student in each Mentor Group (8 in total), who is also a member of the Sixth Form Committee and represents the views of their Tutor Group.

The Head Boy and Head Girl play a vital role in the life of the School. There is one Head Boy and one Head Girl who lead the Sixth Form Committee and coordinate the school’s Junior Leadership Team. The Head Boy and Head Girl represent all students of the school and sixth form to teachers, parents, governors and members of the public. They are required to speak to large and small groups of parents, students and teachers and to chair a range of meetings. They will coordinate the Sixth Form Committee and the various sub-committees and will need to bring all the information together continually to improve the life of students and the school community as a whole.

The new student leaders will be appointed for a 12-month term. The Head boy, Head Girl and Student Leaders need to have qualities that will enable them to fulfil the demands of their roles. A student leader will: Be able to use their initiative; Show commitment to the school, their college and their leadership role; Be reliable and have good time management skills; Demonstrate good organisation skills (personal and the ability to work in teams); Be determined and persevere to achieve success; Show humility (the role represents the College and School, but at the same time it represents a service to the other students); Act with responsibility and Demonstrate leadership.

Headteacher, Mr Waller, said: “We are pleased so many of our pupils have applied for the student leadership roles as it shows that our pupils care about their school and making a positive difference. I am looking forward to meeting those students who have applied, hearing their ideas about the school and learning of the qualities they have to offer as a member of the student leadership team.”
