Over the last few weeks students in Year 10 and Year 7 have been learning about the ways in which art and maths can be linked together.

Year 10 pupils have been working on a project entitled ‘Repeat, Reflect, Rotate’. The idea came about after staff from both subjects decided to work together to show pupils how Art and Maths can be used collectively for learning purposes.

The Year 10 group were inspired to use their photography and artwork by the contemporary artist Damien Hirst and his series of butterfly patterns. All the students who took part have their creation on display next to the maths classrooms, showing all the students how the two subjects can work together.Meanwhile Year 7 pupils made Aboriginal storytelling cubes which are also displayed along the corridor next to the maths classrooms.

Year 10 student Lucy used her photo of a butterfly to create an impressive piece of art work. Lucy said: “I edited my design on the computer and used bright colours and symmetry to make the design effective.”

Fellow student Sara said: “Art is one of my favourite subjects so doing this project has helped me to understand more about Maths.”

Art Teacher Mrs Williams said: “Teachers from Art and Maths felt that there were ways the subjects could work together to benefit our pupils. For example, the reason the theme of ‘Repeat, Reflect, Rotate’ was selected is that sometimes students find the topic of rotation challenging in maths lessons. By introducing this topic via art lessons pupils were able to learn from a different view point which has in turn has helped them in their maths lessons.

“We have been really pleased with the work we have done with Year 7 and Year 10 so far this year and hope to offer further collaborative projects this term.”
