A group of Carr Hill students have been placed an impressive 5th out of 25 teams at the UKMT 2015 Team Maths Challenge Regional Heats.

Year 9s Jack and Sam, Year 8 Jack and Year 7 Nathan formed the Carr Hill team. They proved to be a force to be reckoned with as they achieved the highest place in the school’s history at the competition run by the Mathematics Trust.

The students took part in the Group Round and worked together to solve ten questions of varying type and ability. This was followed by the Crossnumber round which was like a crossword but with numerical answers, then there was the Shuttle round where pupils had to compete against the clock to correctly answer a series of questions. Finally, the teams split into pairs taking it in turns to solve problems against the clock.

Following their success at the competition each student was presented with a certificate from the Mathematics Trust. Year 7 Nathan said: “It feels brilliant to have finished fifth and it was fun to be a part of the day.”

Year 8 Jack said: “Lots of the questions that came up were about things we had studied in class and that helped us a lot.”

Maths Teacher Mrs Jones said: “Finishing in the top five is a huge accomplishment for our students and shows what talented mathematicians they all are.”
