A group of 9 and 10 students have received certificates from the Mathematics Trust for achieving top grades in the organisation’s Intermediate Challenge.

Students across both year groups took part in the challenge, which consisted of three sections, during the school day last term. The school recently received the results of the test along with certificates for the top scoring students.

The Mathematics Trust, which is a registered charity whose aim is to advance the education of children and young people in mathematics, organised the nationwide competition and awarded Bronze, Silver and Gold prizes to those who achieved a certain mark or higher.

Year 10 Sarah was provided with a certificate for achieving the best grade in Year 10 and a certificate for achieving the grade level required for a Silver award. Sarah said: “The test was in three sections. As you went up a section the challenge got harder and I did find it difficult towards the end.”

Fellow Year 10 Hannah, who achieved a Bronze certificate to reflect her impressive test score, said: “The test was all about problem solving and we had about an hour to complete it. It was definitely challenging.”

Year 9 student Chris achieved the highest mark in the school, highest mark in his year and a gold certificate. Chris said: “I’m proud and surprised to have been awarded these certificates. I found the test hard so it feels amazing to have done so well.”

Maths teacher Mrs Potts said: “We feel it is important to offer our pupils the chance to take part in activities such as the UKMT Intermediate Challenge. Challenges such as this are a good opportunity for our pupils to show their mathematical skills and build on what they have learnt in lessons. I think all the students who took part did a wonderful job of representing the school.”
