A short story written by Year 8 student Liam has made it through to the second round of  the 500 WORDS competition, run by The Chris Evans Breakfast Show.

Staff running the competition at the national radio show received 120,000 entries initially, and have whittled those down taking their favourites, including Liam’s story, through to the next round.

Liam, who entered the competition alongside his classmates, entitled his story ‘Tie Massacre In New York’. The story is about a man who has a favourite tie and the chaos caused when he wakes up one day to find it missing.

Liam’s story will now be sent to the Reading Agency for the next stage of judging. If successful, Liam’s entry will make it to the final 50 and Liam will be invited the to the 500 WORDS Final when the winners will be announced live on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show.

The prizes for the competition are as follows: first place will win Chris Evans’ height in books (6.2″) and 500 books for their school, second place will win Alex Jones’ height in books (5.6″) and third place will win their own height in books.

Liam said: “We were asked to write the short story in our lesson and then finish it as homework. I used lots of imagination to write the story and I think there are lots of unusual things that happen in it. I was surprised and pleased when I heard I had made it through to the next round.”

Liam’s English teacher Mr Dellow said: “We all wish Liam good luck for the next stage of the competition. I have every confidence that his story has what it takes to impress the judges once more.”
