A number of Carr Hill students have taken part in the Free your Feet challenge which encourages pupils to walk to school.

The challenge is simple and aims to reduce congestion around school entrances and increase students’ awareness of walking; creating healthier students who arrive at school safely and ready to begin learning.

Living Streets is the organisation behind the project. The organisation believe that the school journey offers a daily opportunity for the whole family to take part in physical activity and that this leads to children building independence through practising road safety. There are also obvious benefits to the environment if more students choose to walk to school rather than travel by car or bus.

The Carr Hill pupils who chose to get involved in the challenge were given a postcard to fill in detailing how many minutes they had spent walking each week. At the end pupils were asked to add up the total time they had spent walking before handing their postcard into school for the chance to win high street vouchers.

Year 8 students Jake and 8 Olivia were picked at random from all the entries handed in and each received £50 in vouchers. Olivia said: “I heard about the challenge in an assembly and decided to take part. I like walking to school because you can talk to your friends and it’s good exercise.”

Care Leader Mrs Germaine was involved in encouraging students to take part in the challenge. She said: “As a school we continually look for opportunities to inspire our students to learn both in and outside the classroom. This challenge made our pupils think about the positive impact that walking to school can have, not only for themselves but for the wider community and environment. I would like to thank all the students who got involved.”
