A group of sporty Year 8 students have been crowned the winners of an indoor sportshall athletics tournament.

The all boy squad competed with 10 other schools from across Blackpool at the event which was held at Blackpool Sports Centre. Two pupils per school were entered into events such as the standing long jump, the shot put and sprinting laps.

Students scored points based on where they finished in the group with the highest achievers gaining the most points for their school. The Carr Hill team excelled across the board and were crowned champions with a lead of 20 points.

As a result the pupils have qualified for the Sportshall Athletics County Finals in March. At the next stage of the competition the pupils will face other schools from across Lancashire.

Team member Jack competed in the Speed bounce event which involved jumping over a mat with a triangle in the middle as many times as possible in 30 seconds. Jack won the event and claimed the maximum points for the school. He said: “It was an exhilarating feeling to find out we had won. I’ve only really won things individually before and not as a group. It was a brilliant feeling to win something as a team.”

Fellow student Ethan is a keen athlete and names athletics as one of his favourite hobbies. He said: “I competed in the triple jump and two different track events. We found some of the events challenging but overall I think we all did a great job.”

Jake, who was part of the Carr Hill team that won the Year 7 Outdoor Athletics Competition last year, is confident Carr Hill can do well at the next stage of the competition. He said: “I think we can win the county final if we work hard beforehand and on the day.”

PE teacher Mr Doughty went with the students to the competition. He said: “The boys all performed to a high standard and demonstrated their natural athletic ability. We are delighted to have won this competition and look forward to the county finals next month.”
