Over 20 students gave up their Sunday morning to take part in the Lytham St Annes Lions Club charity swimarathon.

The pupils had already worked hard to secure £750 in sponsorship money before they hit the pool to complete their swimarathon challenge. Carr Hill students, aged between 11 and 16, were split into four teams and had 50 minutes to complete as many laps as they could.

All four teams, who completed the challenge in a relay style, did a fantastic job with the top performing team managing an impressive 4,400 meters, or 89 laps, between them.

80 percent of the money raised by the students will be donated to the charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and the remaining 20 percent will go to the Carr Hill PE department.

Year 9 student Joe took part in the swimarathon as he is already a keen swimmer and is a member of a local swimming club. He said: “The swimarathon was a way to do something you enjoy whilst raising money for charity. I raised lots of sponsorship money through family and I’m pleased I’ve been able to help CRY.”

Year 10 student Libby took part in last years’ swimarathon and set a target for this year alongside her teammates. Libby said: “We wanted to swim 90 lengths in the time given and we managed 89. I will definitely be taking part next year and will aim to break our 90 lengths target.

“There is always a good atmosphere at the swimarathon and it is nice to work as a team with other Carr Hill students.”

PE teacher Mr Doughty was at the event to support the students. He said: “The school has been involved in this fundraiser for a number of years. This year, as with previous years, I have been impressed with the students’ can do attitude and their ability to just get on with it. The challenge is not easy yet the pupils always do the best they can. They were absolute troopers.

“I’m delighted we were able to raise £750. A special mention goes to Ethan in Year 8 who raised an impressive £150 alone. The money collected by all the students is going to a very worthy cause and the remaining 20 percent will be used to enhance learning within the PE department.”
