Year 7 students have raised £1,000 for the charity the Friends of Hwange Trust by designing and selling postcards featuring sketches of elephants.

The Year 7 students were set the important task to help promote and raise awareness of a terrible event which occurred in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe, Africa. The students used their postcards to help raise money for the Friends of Hwange Trust who are working hard to improve the lives of the animals living in the Hwange National Park.

Art and Photography Teacher Miss Wignall organised the fundraising activity. She said: “Sadly 130 elephants were fatally poisoned by poachers. The poachers poisoned the animal’s waterholes with cyanide, which has had devastating effects on the environment and elephant population.

“Our Year 7’s have worked extremely hard in their Art lessons, producing fantastic observational drawings of Elephants. I’m so proud of them for raising so much money for such a worthy cause.”

Year 7 Brody did a great job of selling his postcards and soon had none left. He said: “I sold lots of postcards to my nan and granddad. They really liked the design and I think they are going to send some of the copies to other relatives. My family love animals and wildlife so were happy to support the charity.”

Fellow student Kierra raised a fantastic £45 selling her postcards. She said: “I love drawing and raising money for charity so this task was really fun. All my family have said that my drawing is beautiful. I think they are planning to frame the postcards and put them on display around the house.”

Well done to all the Year 7s who worked so hard to raise money for the Friends of Hwange Trust.
