Carr Hill’s top musicians and vocalists came together to perform in the school’s annual Christmas Concert.

Guests heard everything from festive classics such as Silent Night and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas to current pop tunes including Next To Me and Thinking Out Loud. Some students performed as soloists whilst others teamed up to perform as duos or as part of a group. There were also choir performances from the school choir and the Year 7 choir.

Other pupils showcased the years of hard work and dedication it takes to learn to play an instrument with impressive trumpet, flute and piano solos on the bill. Whilst further students wowed with their natural vocal talents either as solo artists or within a group.

Each performance was greeted with a large round of applause from the audience which was made up of proud family members, supportive friends and encouraging staff. Over 50 students took to the stage during the show and it was obvious that hours of rehearsal time had taken place to perfect the final performances.

But the evening wasn’t all about the students as a group of staff  put in a performance of the Christmas classic the Fairytale of New York. Unlike the pupils not all the staff taking part had a natural singing ability! Never the less they succeeded in achieving their goal of delivering an entertaining performance.

Year 9 student Jack has been playing the trumpet for six years and has performed in many school productions. During the Christmas Concert Jack performed Cherry Blossom and Apple Time and God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen. Jack said: “It’s fun to perform in front of an audience. I chose songs that I like and practised them at home before the concert. As well as performing in the concert I enjoyed hearing the other students, especially the Year 7s who haven’t performed in a Carr Hill production before.”

Year 7 student Ellen took part in the school Christmas Concert for the first time and chose to sing Silent Night. Ellen has been singing for as long as she can remember and regularly takes part in concerts and other productions. Ellen said: “I chose to sing Silent Night as it is one of my favourite Christmas songs. Lots of my family came to watch the concert and they all said they were really proud of my performance.”

Whilst the students on stage delivered fantastic performances there was also a team of hard working pupils backstage ensuring everything went to plan. Over 15 students form the Backstage and Technical Crew and are responsible for everything from the lighting to the music to the staging. Without their input the show would not be possible.

Music teacher Miss Dawson organised the concert alongside fellow teachers Mr Gally and Mr Charlton. She said: “All the pupils worked incredibly hard, giving up hours of their own time to attend rehearsals in school or rehearsing at home and we are incredibly proud of them. So much goes into the preparation of this concert and I’m delighted that the evening was such a success. I would like to say thank you and well done to all the staff and students involved whether they were on or behind the stage.”

“I would also like to thank school staff for releasing pupils from lessons for rehearsals and everyone who came along on the night, thank you for your support.”
