A group of Carr Hill students have created their very own soft drink brand as part of a school business challenge.

The students, who are in Year 9, 10 and 11, created the drink brand called Waterfall from scratch. They were responsible for everything from the drink’s ingredients, to the product branding to the price point. Pupils worked on the brand for 10 weeks presenting the final product to the school’s Senior Leadership Team.

The challenge was part of Coca-Cola Enterprises which has joined forces with school students from across the country to help raise awareness for intellectual disability sports charity, Special Olympics Great Britain.

At the beginning of the challenge each Carr Hill student was allocated a role within the team. Students held positions such as Managing Director, Finance Manager and Product Development Manager. Over the course of ten weeks pupils worked alongside teacher, Mrs Fahey, to bring their brand vision to life.

Luke, who is in Year 9, was the Chief Executive for the project. Luke said: “I put myself forward for that role because I think I’m a good leader and I’m organised. I learnt loads whilst creating Waterfall and now I know that there is a whole lot more to a product that what you see on the shelf.

“I found working out the cost of the drink the most difficult part of the challenge but I think we got it right in the end. I would definitely do something like this again because I’m really interested in business.”

Fellow student Courtney is in Year 10 and was the Product Development Manager during the challenge. Courtney said: “I took part in the challenge because I thought it would be fun and I enjoy being creative. I liked making the drink as we just got lots of different juices and tried out as many combinations as we could. The final drink tasted great.

“I put myself forward for the role of Product Development Manager because I thought I would be good at being responsible for making the juice. The best part of the challenge was working in a team with the other students and seeing the final product.”

Deputy Headteacher Miss Jordinson was one of the panel members at the students’ final product presentation. Miss Jordinson said: “I was impressed with the final product. It was clear that the students had thought carefully about each area of the process and worked together to generate a very professional product. It also tasted great! Well done.”
