Year 7 students have been busy learning about DNA with a little help from a few tasty treats!

The students, who used sweets to create the DNA structure, worked in pairs to build their impressive display item. Each set of students created a section of the structure before joining it to a structure created by another pair. Eventually the students created a DNA strand that the whole class had contributed to.

Bradley was one of the  students in the class. He said: “Using the sweets and making the DNA strand made it easier to understand the lesson and it was also more interesting. We learnt about how the cells make up the DNA strand and how police can get your DNA from a door or a table.”

Fellow student Paige, who says science is one of her favourite subjects , was also impressed with the lesson. She said: “Ms Hilton-Peet brought the sweets in so we could make the DNA strand. It was much more fun using sweets than other materials. We couldn’t eat the structure at the end because of bacteria but I didn’t mind because it looked nice on display.”

Science Teacher Ms Hilton-Peet said: “I was impressed with how quickly the students picked up the key learnings of the lesson. They engaged very well with the topic and enjoyed creating the DNA strand.”
