Carr Hill Sixth Form has challenged the rest of the school to a battle of wit, knowledge and skill. For the first time in Car Hill history the school has run an ‘Are you Smarter than a Sixth Former?’ competition.

The competition saw Sixth Form members of each of the six colleges take on main school pupils from the same college. The event took place over three days and students were challenged to answer questions about stories that had been in the news during the previous week. Questions such as, Which UK football ground sells the most expensive pie? What World Record did skateboarder Rich Millington set this week?

On Monday Ceres and Minerva students from the main school teamed up to beat Sixth Formers from the same colleges. Upon seeing each question students had to choose whether to answer the questions without A,B or C options, which would gain them two points if answered correctly, or see the options before answering and, if answered correctly, score one point.  The first competition ended in a tie and even a tiebreaker question could not separate the teams.

Year 13 Adam was one of the Minerva Sixth Form team members. He said: “The competition was really good fun and a positive way to bring the Sixth Formers and main school students together. We should do more activities like this. Of course I would have liked the Sixth Formers to win our competition round but we drew fairly.”

On Tuesday Juno and Poseidon took on the Sixth Formers and won. Year 9 student Poppy, who is in Juno College, said: “The competition was very good fun. Some of the questions were hard but the multiple choice options made things easier. My sister was playing against the main school in the Sixth Form team and it was nice to have a bit of healthy competition between us.”

Tim, who is in year 11 and a member of Poseidon College, said: “It was great to do something with the Sixth Formers. The competition definitely bought the whole school together.”

The final competition was between Ceres and Mercury and the pressure was on the Sixth Form students to come out victorious to be in with any chance of winning the whole competition. After a tense competition round the Sixth Formers won making the overall competition a draw.

Assistant Head Miss Clancy organised the competition. She said: “The aim of the activity was to bring the Sixth Form and main school together which it certainly did. It was great entertainment for staff and students and ended each school day on a fun note.

“Since the competition was such a success, and a tie, we will bring it back next term. I think this is something we will continue throughout the year. Thank you to all the students who volunteered to take part.”
