Carr Hill High School has been awarded Satellite Club funding from Lancashire Sports Partnership so that the school can offer a handball club to students and young people from the wider community.

Satellite Club funding is provided to make it easy for young people to stay in sport, or to start playing sport for the first time, helping to make participating in sport a lifelong habit.

The school has been running a handball club successfully for some time, having had teams ranked as highly as second in the county in previous years. Due to this success, and interest from students, the school decided to apply for funding with the aim of making the club available to young people from Kirkham and the surrounding areas.

The Satellite Club funding has been used to purchase specialist steel handball goals and official England Handball Handballs. The floor within the school’s sports dome, where the club meets, will also get new handball markings.

PE teacher Mr Doughty, who holds an England Handball Level 1 certificate in Coaching Handball, is running the club.  Mr Doughty said: “Handball is a great sport and the students love it because they are applying skills they have, such as dribbling and catching, and developing them in a new sporting environment.

“The school was delighted to receive funding from Lancashire Sports Partnership and I hope that our new equipment will encourage students within the school and young people from the wider community to try a sport they may not have played before.”

Year 7 student Matthew is an all-round sportsman who plays football, tennis and cricket. He said: “I like ball games and had never tried handball before. I saw the club advertised on the school’s extracurricular timetable and decided to give it a try.”

Year 9 student Jordan, has played handball before and enjoys the sport. He said: “I learnt to play handball at a summer camp a few years ago. I wasn’t sure if I would be able to play it again as it isn’t as common as other sports. I was pleased to find out there was a club at school.”

Handball Club takes place every Thursday in the sports dome between 3.30pm and 5pm. It is open to students in year 7, 8 and 9 or aged between 11 and 14.
