The end of year College Celebrations are an opportunity to recognise the achievements and successes of Carr Hill High School students. Unsurprisingly the College and Care Leaders give out around 200 awards per college and this year was no different!

Many students have overcome personal and academic challenges this year and are now thriving, whilst others have managed 100 per cent attendance, which is no mean feat! Some have been recognised for their outstanding merit achievements and others for their exemplary behaviour.

Mentors are also responsible for choosing recipients of awards and select two students from their group, one to receive an improver award and the other an achievement award. Awards are also handed out to students who have made excellent progress at Key Stage 3 and 4, and those who have lived by one of the school’s key mottos: Proud to Belong.

One student is also awarded the prestigious Student of the Year accolade. This student is given a special tie to wear the following year and is expected to be a role model to others in the school. There is one Student of the Year for each college. Jack Dinsley was chosen for Mercury.

Jack said: “ I was so shocked when my name was called, I couldn’t believe it. There are over 100 students in Mercury so to be selected from a college full of great students was a real honour. My mum was in tears because she was so proud.

“I am looking forward to wearing my tie next year and continuing to set a good example for other students.”

Selecting students for any of the awards is no easy task. Mrs O Donnell, who is the College Leader for Apollo, said: “We have so many talented and hardworking students so choosing who receives an award is always a difficult task. This year I would like to mention Niall Willey, who gained the College Leader’s Achievement Award, Liam Coburn who was given the College Leader’s Progress Award and, of course, Elise Thompson who is Apollo’s Student of the Year. All three have excelled themselves this year and are excellent examples of the wonderful students we have in Apollo College.”

In addition to the distribution of awards the Junior College Leaders also gave a short speech about the college and the year ahead. Other students performed songs and read out pieces of poetry they had written between awards.

During each college celebration the school hall was packed with parents, carers, grandparents and friends of Carr Hill High School, all of whom proudly looked on as the students picked up their awards.

Mrs Croasdale was pleased when her daughter, year 10 student Amy, won the Innovation Award for Juno College. Each of the six clusters selects students who have excelled in their subject area and award a special prize. Mrs Croasdale said: “I was thrilled that Amy was given the Innovation Award as she really enjoys IT and Engineering. I think the awards are a great way to celebrate the success of individuals and the college as a whole. I know that Amy and her friends look forward to them and so do we.”

Mrs Charlton has a daughter called Chelsea who is currently in year 9 in Apollo College. Chelsea received a number of certificates including 100 per cent attendance and the silver merit award, for achieving 250 merits this year. In addition to this Chelsea was also one of a number of students to perform at the celebration, singing DNA by Little Mix alongside a friend.

Mrs Charlton said: “It was wonderful to watch Chelsea receive her certificates. She has worked really hard this year and I’m pleased that Carr Hill take the time to recognise its students’ achievements. Chelsea was delighted with her awards and I’m sure this will encourage her to continue working hard next year.”

Mr Davidson is the College Leader for Poseidon. He said: “It is always a pleasure to celebrate the achievements of our students. They work so hard throughout the year and deserve to be recognised in front of their teachers, parents, guardians and peers.”

College Leader for Ceres, Miss Coulthard, added: “The College Celebrations are looked forward to by students and staff alike. It is an event that celebrates the success of everyone in the college and certainly unites us all. I’m so thrilled with the progress of the Ceres students this year and I can’t wait to build on that next year.”

Well done to all students who achieved an award at their college celebration.
