A class of year 7 students have completed their very own poetry anthology. The book is packed with over 60 poems, with themes including places, love and memories.

The students have been studying poetry in their English class and have looked at Shakespearean sonnets, limericks and odes, as well as WW1 writing and more contemporary rap lyrics. Inspired by different types of poetry the students worked on their own poem for each of the writing styles.

At the end of the module students decided that they would like to create their own poetry anthology to showcase their work to other staff and students. The pupils each selected two poems to be featured in the anthology from the variety they had written.

English teacher Miss Parkinson said: “The students enjoyed the module very much and showed a natural flair for writing poetry. At the end of the module I was so impressed by the level of work and commitment put in that I wanted to ensure the poetry was kept somewhere for other students and staff to enjoy it.

“I spoke to the students and they decided they would like to create a book of their poetry which is where the idea for the anthology came from. Since the book was created it has been shared with other students, staff and even at the New Parents’ Evening event. Everyone has been very impressed with the students’ work and it has been lovely to have the opportunity to share their poems with others.”

Evelyn’s poem feature in the anthology. She said: “Having my poems in the anthology makes me feel like a real author.”

Fellow student Nathan said: “It is a very creative idea and I’m pleased that I got to contribute to the collection of poems.”

Whilst Kayleigh, who has two poems in the anthology described the feeling of having her work featured as ‘unbelievable.’
