Ahead of the 70th anniversary of WW2’s D-Day and the 100 year anniversary of WW1 a Carr Hill student has filled the school grounds with poppy seeds.

Year 11 Kayleigh decided that she wanted to help to spread the message that the young people at Carr Hill have not forgotten the sacrifice many made for this county, planting the seeds as a mark of respect.

Kayleigh, who is an air cadet, was given around 200 free seeds from her local parish Council in Warton. The Council is asking local people to scatter the seeds in their gardens to remind passers-by of the poppy fields of Flanders.

Once Kayleigh received the seeds from her local parish Council she went to the school’s Headmaster Mr Earnshaw with her idea for the school. Mr Earnshaw agreed that the seeds should be scattered in the school grounds.

Kayleigh’s local parish lost six members from their village in WW1 whilst her father served in the army and her Grandfather served in the RAF meaning the message that poppies send out is one very close to Kayleigh’s heart.

She said: “I believe it is important to remember the people who have lost their lives whilst serving for our country. I wanted to plant the poppies in school to show people that although we are the younger generation we still respect and remember the sacrifice those soldiers made for us.

“The poppies will grow around the ground at the entrance of the school for all the students, teachers, parents and visitors to see as soon as they come through the gates. Everyone will be able to see that at Carr Hill we haven’t forgotten.”

Mr Earnshaw said: “We are now only a few weeks away from the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, one of the most important and traumatic events in British and world history, the consequences of which are still felt in places like the Middle East. I’m delighted our students are so interested in and aware of the centenary year, and want to show their respect to the war generation.”

Carr Hill is proud to honour the sacrifice made by the community the school serves, the poppy seed planting is one of several activities that will mark this important anniversary. Other plans include trips to the battlefields organised by the school’s History Department.
