Carr Hill staff and students took part in the ultimate dance off to help raise funds for the South Africa 2014 trip.

Mr Earnshaw, Mrs Beesley, Miss Stott and the yr11 dance academy members took on Miss O’Connor, Mrs Carroll, Mr Doughty and Mr Gillies. The teams were challenged to choreograph their own routine and dance to a mash up of songs.

The hall was packed with hundreds of students who had all paid to come and watch the much anticipated battle. Both groups had been practising since early January, coming in to school early and staying late to perfect their moves.

Mr Earnshaw’s team donned blue Dance Academy hoodies whilst Miss O’Connor’s team chose to wear black but used a range of props including cowboy hats and belly dance hip scarves.

Staff and students alike were entertained by the routines which, of course, included lots of comedy moves. Hits such as Beyonce’s Single Ladies were mixed with Pink Floyd’s We don’t need no education, whilst Kesha’s anthem Timber, accompanied Tom Jones’ classic It’s not unusual.

Following the dance off students were asked to vote with their voices. Pupils cheered for their favourite team and Miss Connor’s dance troupe came out on top. The team were delighted to win and performed the routine all over again, much to the delight of the audience.

Prior to the dance off Miss O’Connor said: “We are all taking this competition really seriously, as the school dance teacher I feel under pressure to lead my team to victory.”

Mr Earnshaw said: “It was a fantastic event and although I was terrified before I performed I have to say it was great fun. I have a huge amount of respect for the Dance Academy students who get up and perform in front of an audience on a regular basis. I would like to thank all the students on our team as they are incredibly talented and worked very hard to get us non dancers into some sort of shape.”

Student, Miaya Leeke, took part and performed in Mr Earnshaw’s team. She also helped to come up with the dance off event as a fundraising opportunity. Miaya said: “The students are all  proud of the effort and time the teachers have put in to take part in this event. It was great fun and we are all really pleased that the event was so popular.”

The dance off fundraiser made £140 which will be used to help pay for the South Africa Sports Academies Tour later this year.
