Carr Hill has opened a Junior Site Team club to give students the chance to have their say in how their school looks.

Around 60 pupils from year 7 to year 11 came to the first ever club meeting and were soon kitted out in overalls and set the task of painting a number of classrooms. Students were given the choice of which colours to use and worked in teams of two throughout the activity.

Meanwhile other students were tasked with making their way around the school and suggesting areas that could be improved, sometimes through displays and others through a painting or shelving. These students completed and submitted site surveys to the Carr Hill Site Team for consideration.

Around 90 students have shown an interest in taking part in the club, which runs every Friday from 3.10pm-4pm. All the students are given a buddy for health and safey reasons and will be given the opportunity to take part in a whole host of activities all with the sole purpose of giving the students the chance to have an input into how their school looks.

Student, Ellie May, said: “I have joined the Junior Site Team because I want to help improve the look of my school. I have really enjoyed painting so far and I can’t wait to get more involved in other activities over the coming weeks.”

Fellow student Sam was equally impressed with the club. He said: “I love creative things which is why this club appealed to me. I’m going to try and come every week so that I can help with lots of different areas of the school.

Mrs Keaskin is one of the teachers running the club. She said: “We are overwhelmed with the interest we have received from students. It is wonderful that so many of them really care about what their school looks like.

“Over the coming weeks we hope to introduce a tasks sheet which will give students the chance to undertake a range of tasks and document the evidence. This will give our students the opportunity to see what they have achieved and be recognised for it.”
