St Annes Fire Crew visited Carr Hill recently to deliver an important presentation about road safety.

The Wasted Lives presentation focused on the dangers that young drives can, and do, put themselves in. The presentation showed a number of re-enacted videos based on true life events highlighting dangers such as speeding, not wearing a seat belt and drink driving.

The presentation explained not only the effects on the lives of drivers and passengers but also their families and any other victims involved in a car accident. The presentation has previously been given to older age groups but the fire crew hope that lowering the age of those who see it will result in fewer tragedies.

Alongside the presentation pupils were also given practical exercises to help get them think about how small changes, such as driving five miles slower, can make the difference between life and death.

Crew Manger, Jonny Williams, said: “We have a good response from pupils when we give this presentation and we are seeing a deduction in the number of young people involved in car accidents since we started delivering this presentation in schools.

“We know the hard hitting videos we show have an impact and we hope that they will help teenagers to make the right decisions if they are ever placed in a situation they could avoid, such as getting in a car with a friend they know has been drinking.”

The fire crew explained to Carr Hill pupils that they were old enough to have opinions on what are safe situations and what aren’t.  Year 11 student, Kayleigh, said: “The videos were hard to watch, they definitely had the shock factor and demonstrated the impact that dangerous driving can have. It will make me and my friends think more carefully in the future.”

Carr Hill’s Personal Development Leader, Mr Beale, organised for the presentation to take place. He said: “I would like to thank St Annes Fire Crew for giving the presentation. I think it has been extremely beneficial for the students as it really hits home how dangerous driving can be if you make the wrong choices as a driver or a passenger.”
