Year 7, 8 and 9 students have recently returned from a trip to Tower Wood in Windermere.

Around 30 students attended the weeklong trip, which Carr Hill has been running for pupils for 28 years. The trips aims to promote and encourage independence, widen students’ horizons and demonstrate the importance of team work.

The students took part in kayaking, canoeing, dry skiing, mountain biking and orienteering. In addition to these activities students were encouraged to make and pack their own lunches and take responsibility for the items and equipment they would need each day. Pupils stayed in a large house sharing a number of dorms and sleeping in bunk beds throughout the week.

The students left Carr Hill on Monday morning and returned on Friday afternoon following an action packed week. In addition to the outdoor activity students also took part in games and competitions in the evening.

Carr Hill student, Bethany Needham, attended the trip. Bethany said: “My friends and I had a great time. My favourite part of the trip was kayaking across the length of Lake Windermere. It is the longest lake in England and we were the first Carr Hill students to do it.”

Physics teacher Mr Cooper, who attended the trip along with three other staff members, said: “The Tower Wood trip has been running for years, it is popular amongst the students and promotes learning in a different environment. The students are kept busy throughout the week and taught to work together and independently. We find it to be a very beneficial experience for them.”
