Year 12 AS Level Government and Politics students recently spent the day at the Houses of Parliament.

Eight students travelled to London, alongside their teachers, for the special guided tour. Pupils took in the many attractions which included the 1,000 year-old Westminster Hall and the House of Lords.

Students were also treated to some live action, with the highlight of the day being the opportunity to watch MPs questioning the Foreign Secretary, William Hague, from the public gallery of the House of Commons. The year 12s also met the local MP for the Fylde, Mark Menzies, who explained his responsibilities and duties as an MP.

During the second half of the day students had an interactive seminar at the UK Headquarters of the European Union based on the origins, institutions and politics of the EU. This was followed by some free time to explore Covent Garden.

Student, Luke Bridge, said: “The trip was very interesting. I enjoyed the guided tour and the interactive seminar. It has really given us students a better understanding of Government and Politics as a whole.

Teacher, Mr Barker, said: “The trip was designed to enhance student learning and provide them with an insight into the way our government works. At the end of the day I felt that both the staff and pupils had learned something new, it was a very informative day for all.
