Year 13 student David Ireland has won a scholarship at the prestigious accountancy firm KPMG.

KPMG will pay for David to study accountancy at Durham University whilst he trains with them. Having been encouraged to apply by the Head of Sixth Form Mr Wallace, David beat off 100 other applicants in a rigorous recruitment programme which included Maths and English tests alongside an interview at the offices in Preston.

David, who has always enjoyed Maths, scored an impressive 95% in his maths test and 70% in his English test. Starting in September 2014 David will undertake a four year course.  The course includes time studying at Durham University and work experience within the firm’s office.

KPMG has offices all over the country and the world. David hopes to live in countries such as Dubai once he achieves his qualification. David said: “I have always liked working with numbers so I felt accountancy would be a good career path. Working for a company such as KPMG will offer me a solid career with the opportunity to progress and travel.

In the interview I ensured that I demonstrated my passion for accountancy and numbers as well as being confident and friendly. I think this, alongside my test scores, helped me to bag a place. My mum is over the moon, she said that this has saved her a fortune in university fees.”

Head of Sixth Form, Mr Wallace, said: “We are all incredibly proud of David’s achievement. When I heard about the opportunity to work for KPMG I knew that David would be a perfect candidate and encouraged him to apply. David has worked incredibly hard and also has a natural ability when it comes to Maths, I’m sure he will be a real asset to KPMG.”

David is currently preparing for his A Level exams and is expected to achieve an A in maths and accountancy, alongside a B in further maths.
