A group of students were taken on an educational Geography field trip, not to Beacon Fell or to the Lake District, but to the shopping centre Liverpool One!

The trip organised for the GCSE course was part of a controlled assessment task where students are asked ‘What is the impact of a recent development on the surrounding area?’

Two groups of students went to Liverpool over two separate days and spent their time working hard to conduct land surveys, field sketches, environmental impact surveys, questionnaires and interviews in order to investigate their task.

Guided by staff from Liverpool One, the students were taken on a tour of the retail development and were pointed out various points of interest. For example: how the history of the city has been preserved within the development, how entertainment is provided for customers (Fireman Sam and Marcus Collins from the X Factor have both recently performed there!) and how wildlife has been encouraged into the city centre through the parkland and nature trails.

Mrs McMurtrie and Miss Butterworth led the trip and were pleased with how successful it had been.

Head of Culture Cluster, Mrs McMurtrie said: “Being able to take the students out, gives them first-hand experience that not only contributes to their GCSE but also gives them an insight of what it could be like to do a Geography related career when they leave education.”

“Despite getting soaked on the second day Miss Butterworth and I were really pleased with how hard all the students worked and are really looking forward to reading some outstanding controlled assessment pieces.”
