MUD soaked pitches weren’t enough to put off our local primary schools from competing in a tag rugby tournament.

The afternoon long event, held at Carr Hill High School, saw five local primary schools take part in the friendly competition. Teams from Ribby with Wrea Green, St Josephs, Wesham C of E, Holy Family and Weeton primary schools braved the cold and muddy conditions to compete for the winning title.

The tournament, which is in its third year running, aims to make rugby inclusive for primary school children and helps them to get a better understanding of the sport and an experience of Carr Hill life before they leave in Year 6 to start the Royal Avenue School as Year 7 students.

Deputy Headteacher, Mr Matt Hall from Ribby with Wrea Green Primary School is very pleased with the success of the tournament.

He said: “The children have enjoyed playing tag rugby; it has been something different to do for the local primary schools. To get the children out no matter what the weather has been like or the conditions is just fantastic and considering how muddy it is they love it, the girls just as much as the boys!

“Without the organisation of the event by Mr Penney and Carr Hill High School we wouldn’t be able to participate as there just aren’t the facilities available to us – it’s been brilliant.”

The end of the tournament saw Ribby with Wrea Green winning and making it through to the final, being held at Fylde Rugby Club, against Holy Family Primary School.

And following the success of the tag rugby, Carr Hill High School will be hosting Football and Netball tournaments later in the year to see the primary schools compete again.
