STUDENTS are inviting people to take on a fiery challenge in the name of fundraising.

Sixth formers from Carr Hill Sixth Form Centre in Kirkham are holding a Fire-walking event to raise money for a school expedition to South East Asia.

The group of six, known as the ‘Jungle Challengers’, from the Royal Avenue school have planned the daring event for Friday 25th January to coincide with Burns Night which will be held at Carr Hill High School.

In a bid to raise £21,000 they are holding a variety of events including the Fire-walking to help reach their mammoth total.

The students, James McGrahan, Jack Ashman, Lucy McGurrell, Liam Kay, Jack Burton and Jacob Green are being sponsored and each of them will be getting their adrenaline pumping before they take a walk on the hot stones.

Their fundraising efforts are all in aid of a social action project organised by World Challenge where the Carr Hill students will help fellow youngsters in the impoverished third world nation and help to build a new irrigation and sanitation system in the South East Asian country of Laos.

The Firewalking event is open to anybody who’s daring enough to take a walk on the hot stones. Full sponsorship is required from entrants and cost is £30 per person to take part.

During the evening there will be food available along with a licensed bar and there will be children’s events held throughout the night.

Along with this event, the ‘Jungle Challengers’ are holding a curry night at ‘The Buraq’ Indian restaurant in Kirkham, where a buffet dinner will be served at the cost of £10 per head on 19th February. Tickets are available now and the students are hoping that their upcoming events will be successful.

So far the students have raised £8,500 and still have a long way to go until they reach their target. The Jungle Challengers are welcoming any donations from the public and local businesses.

Assistant Headteacher, Mr Paul Wallace said: “The students and their parents are working really hard to organise some fantastic events in order to raise the money they need for the trip.

“It would be great to see parents and students getting involved with the Firewalking event as well as the curry night coming up during February.”
