A TALENTED student has been cooking up a storm in a national competition.

Year 11 student, Connor Wynn, has made it to the regional final of the Rotary Young Chef of the Year competition.

The Carr Hill High School & Sixth Form Centre student battled his way through two rounds of intense cooking and came first place in the district final of the competition, which was held at Morecambe College, winning him a place in the regional final.

The standards of cooking and presentation amongst the six other contestants was high but budding chef Connor impressed the judges with his carefully prepared dishes and managed to win himself a place in the next round.

The 15 year old, who works part – time at The Villa in Wrea Green, had two hours to cook a three course meal for 2 people. He impressed the panel of judges with Goats Cheese Curd for starter, followed by a Sea Bream with potatoes, spinach and a citrus sauce as a main course and poached pear with rice pudding as a dessert.

And he is thrilled to have done so well.

Connor said: “I really enjoy cooking so the competition was a great experience for me. I love creating new meals and with the help of my colleagues at The Villa I designed some very interesting meals.

But he adds: “The part of the competition that I find most difficult is getting all my timings correct. We have two hours and the cooking is really intense so I just have to try and make sure that I get everything perfect.”

Connor will be working on his timings before he travels down to Wales to compete in the regional final which is being held in March. Here he will cook the same 3 course menu and aim to impress another panel of judges with his astounding culinary skills.

Along with the support of Connor’s Food Technology teacher Mrs Judith Brennand, Kirkham Rotary Club initially encouraged Connor to enter the competition and they are thrilled with his success so far.

Rotary member, Barrie Stacey said: “I am delighted with Connor’s success in getting to the Regional finals of the Rotary Young Chef Competition. It is the first time that a candidate sponsored by Kirkham Rotary has reached this level in this worthwhile annual event.”
