Carr Hill High School students organised a 1950’s themed tea dance event for residents of the Kirkham based home for older people.

Pupils provided and served a range of cakes and chatted to residents whilst 1950’s music played. Students had also designed 1950’s bunting to decorate the room used at Milbanke. The Year 9 BTEC Dance class performed a piece from this year’s Dance Display for the residents whilst Year 8 Edward learnt a selection of 1950 songs which he played on his guitar before Year 9 Abi sung ‘Hallelujah’.

Maddy, who was one of the Year 9’s at the event, said: “It was fun to perform for the residents and they all looked really happy.”

Elise, who also attended the event, said: “I chatted to the residents and found the experience very rewarding. It was a fun afternoon.”

Seon Ul-Haq, Business Support Officer at Milbanke, said:"Creating opportunities where the young people and older people interact helps bridge the gap between the generations. I feel the 1950's themed Tea-Dance event achieved that –the students could show their artistic talent and the residents have voiced for similar future events to take place."

Headteacher Mr Waller said: “We wanted to host an event for the residents of Milbanke to give back to those in our local community. It was also a valuable experience for our students and an opportunity to spend time with new people and learn new things. The event was a great success and we hope to build on our relationship with Milbanke and look forward to looking at further ways we can work alongside them for benefit of the residents and our students.”
