Former student Abi Cooke, who left Carr Hill in summer 2018, has made it through to the next stage of the famous West End Calling musical theatre competition.

Abi, who has been asked by judges to audition for the last few years decided to go for it this year and was success after singing ‘I’d Give My Life For You’ from the well-known musical Miss Saigon. Abi was judged by industry professionals during her audition and hopes to make it to the competition’s grand final which will be in a West End theatre in London.

Abi, who now studies Level 3 Musical Theatre, said: “It has been a great experience so far. I got amazing feedback at my audition, the judges were so encouraging and gave a constructive critique which is a rarity in most auditions. My dream is to perform for a living. I am so passionate about musical theatre and would love to do it for the rest of my life, whether that be on the West End, Broadway, touring, cruises or being on the entertainment team at a holiday park. After finishing my studies at college I would love to go to drama school, hopefully in London. I want to get the best training I can so I will have a good chance of making it in this very tough industry.

“During my time at Carr Hill, I performed in all of the school concerts from Year 7 to Year 11, with my confidence building each time I performed. I was also in the school production of The Sound of Music. I’ve known since a very young age that I wanted to go down this career path but I have struggled a lot with my confidence. GCSE Music really helped me with my confidence when singing because my teacher Mr Brown had us performing for each other as often as he could until it wasn’t nerve-racking anymore. I still get nervous sometimes ,as every performer does, but I don’t believe I would be at the point I am today without Mr Brown’s support.”

Abi’s former Music Teacher Mr Brown said: “I’m delighted to hear that Abi has made it through to the next round of auditions for West End Calling. Abi always had a natural talent and that, coupled with lots of practice and determination, has led her to where she is today. I have no doubt that Abi’s future is in musical theatre and wish her all the luck for the next stage of the competition.”
