Carr Hill’s Public Speaking team has won the Fylde round of the Rotary Club’s Youth Speaks Competition qualifying for the North West schools heat. This is the fourth consecutive year that the school team has made it to the regional rounds and the second time for the current team.  The national competition is run by The Rotary Club of Great Britain and Ireland.

The winning team, made up of Year 11’s Danielle, Nathan and Rosie, chose to speak about the problems faced by teenagers today including pressures and anxiety. Their efforts impressed judges and resulted in them winning the heat. In addition to this, Nathan was awarded Best Chairperson and Danielle was awarded Best Proposer. Carr Hill also entered a second team who were equally impressive and this team consisted of Year 11’s  Jess, Chloe and Harry.

The Youth Speaks Competition challenges students’ public speaking abilities whilst giving them the opportunity to perform, persuade and entertain the audience with their knowledge of a topic. In teams of three, participants present arguments and points of discussion, before taking questions from the judging panel who are, themselves, skilled orators. Participants can select a topic which is important to them, giving them an opportunity to delve deep into research, formulate ideas and build confidence.

English Teacher Mr Dellow said: “Congratulations to all six of our students. Each and every one has worked hard to prepare for this competition and their delivery on the night was fantastic. I’m delighted that our students have once again made it through to the regional heats- a huge achievement. The next round will take place in Windermere in the new year and we’ll be honing our skills between now and then in the hope of impressing the judges once again.”
