As part of Carr Hill’s ‘We are Reading Challenge’ we have created a number of ‘student author’ posts. The work of our student authors will regularly be shared on the website, in editions of our school magazine and other communication channels. In the second of our student author contributions Year 10 Ollie has written a short story which is untitled. Thank you, Ollie.

Untitled by Ollie, Year 10

Her body lay there......

The door banged open and in stumbled Marty. All the detectives sat there, glaring. “What?” he asked. All eyes turned to the chief.

“Well, glad you could join us.” the chief spat at Marty. Marty quickly sat down, next to his partner, Brock Liddell. “As I was saying, a woman has gone missing, we have no leads on where she has gone. Mary Baxter is 20 years old and was last heard from at 18:06 yesterday when she spoke to her mum. All our concentration is going to be finding this young woman. The leads on this case are Marty and Brock. The pictures are in my office. Dismissed.”

Marty and Brock sat in the local deli discussing the case. Marty is wondering where the witness is and suggests that they should go to the mum’s house. Brock is dismissive of the idea, as suggests that she may have been at work. Marty exclaims “Possible, so then maybe we go around after tea and we work late. Brock is again dismissive and gives a few reasons why he can’t lay stay to work late.

Marty is suspicious of Brock, especially because of the way he hurried out of the deli

Back at the station, Marty finally finds Brock and asks him why he left the deli so quickly. Brock says that the chief needed to see him, and he walks off.  That was weird Marty thinks to himself. He decides to call Mary’s mum herself to ask why she never showed.

“I was never invited to come to deli,” exclaimed Mary’s mum confusedly.

“What, Brock invited you yesterday.” Marty says.

“The only call I received yesterday was from my daughter Mary” she explains.

Marty looks around for Brock and he can’t find him, so he decides to go to the chief to ask if he has seen Brock and he hasn’t. Where has Brock gone? He thinks to himself, he might’ve gone home. So, he decides to check at his house.

He walks out of the station and gets in to his Toyota Camera and drives to Brocks house.

Marty searched the entirety of Brock’s house and couldn’t find one single trace of his partner. Suddenly, as Marty was upstairs he heard a door open and slam, then some strange noises. He knew these noises were coming from downstairs, so he carefully edged his way down the stairs and began to search again.

He notices that the basement door is open. Why?

Marty slowly and quietly walks down the stairs, and there he is.

Why was Brock standing over the body of a girl?

“Brock?” Marty asked confusedly.

“What are you doing here?” Brock asked degradingly.

“Who is that?”

“It is her!” Brock said.

Marty’s eyes flew open in rage and disarray, his hand gradually closed to a fist. He lifted his fist and swung it at his face.

He struck his face causing him to spin around a collapse to floor.

There, her body lay...
